At that time, one of the main directors of Garuda Indonesia, Wiweko Soepono, who led from 1968 to 1984, was an Indonesian Air Force soldier assigned to seek emergency funds to support the struggle in the country against the Dutch. Wiweko in 1948 was on duty in India, and at the same time repaired the Indonesian Dakota DC-3 aircraft.
Wiweko then thought quickly and precisely, so that the existence of the Dakota plane could generate money. Thus, the existence of government assets in the form of an airplane which became known as "Seulawah" (meaning the Golden Mountain) was used for commercial purposes to the Burmese government, which needed it. The first commercial flight was right on January 26, 1949.
It was this fighting spirit, in which Wiweko was destined to become the number one person at Garuda Indonesia Airways (then his name) from 1958 to 1984, setting January 26, 1949 as his anniversary. Over time, especially after the 1998 reform, Garuda Indonesia's leadership tried to change the anniversary, to the momentum of the legal establishment of Garuda Indonesia, namely on March 31, 1950, after it was handed over from the Netherlands to Indonesia.
Our warriors in the past did have very strong principles in establishing historical momentum. Especially with regard to efforts to make Indonesia an independent, independent and self-sufficient country. That's why January 26, 1949 was chosen as the anniversary, rather than March 31, 1950.
Some companies also do the same thing in celebration of the anniversary. Darmaningtyas also gave several other examples, such as PT KAI, which just had its 77th anniversary since its establishment on September 28, 1945. Even though the name KAI was only born during the 1998 reform. Then Damri transportation, celebrated its birthday on November 25, 2022, for its 76th year. Meanwhile, the name Perum Damri will only be available on September 29, 2022.
Returning to Garuda Indonesia, now its leaders are back to normal, celebrating their 74th birthday on January 26, 2023.
